Soho is in central London and in the entertainment district.
Apparently, the name "SoHo" was originally a hunting call.
The area dates back to the 1500's when it had been farmland. It was then was taken over by Henry VIII and used as a royal park.
The Crown then sold parcels in the 17th century for development.
It never became a fashionable area for the rich, and instead was settled by immigrants, mostly Huguenots from France. Hence, it became known as London's French Quarter.
In the mid 19th century all the fashionable families moved away, and theatres, music halls, etc. moved in.
Eating houses opened up and were frequented by poets, writers, artists etc. A "flamboyant" lifestyle was enjoyed. Apparently it used to be a little on the "seedy" side.
It is now home for the independent film, TV and video industries and post production houses. It
hails itself as one of the most creative square miles in the world.
We found this sign on a row house. Apparently the current occupants want to be perfectly clear...
