Brixton Market

Saturday morning walks to Brixton Markets are a great way to start the weekend.

It is a community about a 20 minute walk SE of our home.

Brixton's ethnic transformation began in 1948 when the first wave of African-Caribbean immigrants arrived on the ship "Empire Windrush" from Jamaica.

At the time, the nearest Labour Exchange (Job Centre) was in Brixton.

Unfortunately, Brixton was also the home of two major race riots back in the '80's.

Currently, the neighbourhood has a huge Caribbean, African and Arab influence.

It is also home to the vibrant Brixton Markets, open everyday.

The goods for sale reflect the neighbourhood and display wares ranging from produce, halal meat, fish, clothing and household products.

Brixton has their own currency to encourage local businesses and local trade.

To add to the colour of the neighbourhood, street preachers enthusiastically proclaim their beliefs on street corners.

People of note from Brixton: former Prime Minister John Major, musician David Bowie, singer and songwriter Adele, and, Sharon Osbourne,
