Remembrance Day is on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. It is to commemorate Armistice Day and the end of WWI.
This year, the 100th Anniversary of the start of WW1, the Tower of London was home to a phenomenal tribute.
Ceramic poppies, one for each of the 888,246 soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth countries killed in war, were installed over the grounds to pay remembrance. (The Commonwealth countries included are Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and India.)
Each poppy was sold for £25 (US$40) and the funds raised went to the 6 armed forces charities.
We went to see it the weekend before Remembrance Day. The area was packed with people.
It is called a blood red sea of poppies and grew each day since August.
It is truly an emotionally stunning presentation and has rightfully received recognition around the world. Visitors were estimated at 5 million people. (Half of which I am sure were there the day we went.)
One week later (these last photos are from the news) all the poppies have been removed, leaving behind a field of mud.
How prophetic.
Lest we forget.....
